The Catinaccio/Rosengarten
The Rosengarten group - or italian Catinaccio - is a massif in the Dolomites of northern Italy. It is located between the Tierser Valley and Eggental Valley in South Tyrol and the Fassa Valley in Trentino.

One peculiarity of the Rosengarten is the pink shade, owing to the presence of the mineral dolomite, which takes in the sunset and "glows". Meaning "Rose garden" in German, the name refers to the legend of King Laurin and his Rose Garden, a traditional story explaining the outer appearance of the mountain range. Read the story below.

The Rosengarten-Latemar region has the densest network of hiking trails and is one of the most popular hiking destinations in South Tyrol offering 530 km trails of all difficulty levels. Many via ferratas (climbing routes) fascinate summiteers and a large number of hiking trails that stretch between forests and meadows, are ideal for trekking and bike tours.

In winter, the snow-covered landscape and the modern ski resorts are great fun for winter sports fans. Noteworthy is the ski resort Carezza Ski, not far from Welschnofen/Nova Levante. Beside the thrilling slopes, there are also snowboard parks, cross country trails and ski kindergarten for the little ones.

Not just skiing: on the Rosengarten you can also try ice climbing and snowshoeing.

The Latemar
The Latemar Group, on which peak runs the border between South Tyrol and the Trentino, is accessible from the Val d’Ega valley in South Tyrol as well as from the Alpe di Pampeago and the village of Predazzo in Trentino. The peaks provide also the backdrop for the stunning Lake Carezza. According to a legend, the mountains of the Latemar Group are fossilized puppets.

The Latemar Group, both in winter and summer, is a perfect outdoor pleasure ground.
In summer the mountains offer beautiful hikes and mountainbike trails. A very popular but exhausting mountain tour leads to Mt. Schenón (2,791 m a.s.l.) from the Passo di Costalunga via the Latemar Piccola Saddle.
In winter the wonderful skiing areas Carezza Ski and Ski Center Latemar enthuse skiers and winter sports fans.

King Laurin and his Rose Garden
A long time ago, the wonderful rose garden of King Laurin was located high up at the grey rocks.

The realm of King Laurin and his hardworking dwarf clan who mined for crystals, silver and gold inside the mountains was located in South Tyrol. One day the King at the Adige river wanted to marry his beautiful daughter Similde. All the aristocrats in the area were invited to a May trip, but not King Laurin. However, he decided to take part as an invisible guest by wearing his magic hood.

When he saw Similde at the tournament site, he fell in love with her beautiful face, put her on his horse and rode away with her. Soon Similde’s promised man and his knights moved out to bring back his wife and stood in front of the rose garden shortly afterwards. King Laurin wrapped his miracle belt around him, which gave him the strength of 12 men, and faced the fight. When he saw that he was falling behind in spite of everything, he put on his magic hood and tried to hide in the rose garden, invisible as he thought he was. But the knights recognised by the movements of the roses where King Laurin hid himself. They grabbed him, broke the magic belt and captured him.

Laurin, angry at his fate, turned around and cursed the rose garden (Rosengarten, in German, today known as Catinaccio) that had betrayed him: neither by day nor by night a human eye should ever see it again. But Laurin had forgotten the dusk, and so it comes that the enchanted garden still lets its blossoming roses shine for a short time. This phenomenon, when the rocks of the Catinaccio Group and other Dolomite peaks are illuminated by the rising or setting sun and shine in reddish colours, is called Enrosadira, or alpenglow.

Cipriano also offer great fun. A ski bus connects Tiers/Tires with the nearby ski areas of Carezza-Welschnofen and Ski Center Latemar in Obereggen.
